Embracing Humility

Bible in a Year: Esther 3–5; Acts 1

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves." — Philippians 2:3

Today's Scripture & Insight: Philippians 2:1-11

I'm often amused by all the unofficial holidays we've come up with. Today is World Productivity Day, National Hike with a Geek Day, and National Ice Cream Soda Day. It's not today, but there is a Be Humble Day. But shouldn't we celebrate humility every day?

Humility, as Scripture teaches us, isn't about self-degradation or having a low opinion of oneself. Instead, it's about having a balanced, accurate view of ourselves in relation to God and others. It's about recognizing our need for God, appreciating the worth of others, and serving them selflessly.

Paul's letter to the Philippians holds up Jesus as the ultimate model of humility. Although He was in very nature God, He did not consider equality with God something to be used for His own advantage. Instead, He humbled Himself, taking the nature of a servant and becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!

Our call to humility isn't about observing a single day in a year; it's about living a lifestyle that reflects Jesus' humility in our everyday interactions. It's about serving others with love, not out of obligation but out of genuine concern for their well-being.

So, even as we navigate the plethora of observances and holidays, let's choose to celebrate humility every day, reflecting Jesus' selfless love in all we do.

Reflect & Pray

In what areas of your life can you exercise more humility? How can you follow Jesus' example of humble service today?

Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of humility shown to us through Jesus. Help us to reflect His selflessness in our interactions with others, valuing them above ourselves. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
