Seeing Jesus: Gaining a Deeper Understanding

Bible in a Year: Esther 1–2; John 21

"Jesus answered: 'Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.'" — John 14:9

Today's Scripture & Insight: John 14:6-14

Growing up, Amy had a friend whose father was an expert in origami, the art of paper folding. Whenever he would create a complex piece, at first, Amy could hardly imagine how a simple sheet of paper could transform into a beautifully intricate design. But as he explained the steps and demonstrated each fold, she began to see the result taking shape. Her understanding of what initially seemed impossible deepened.

The disciples faced a similar situation. Despite spending substantial time with Jesus, they were still struggling to understand His true identity. In John 14, Philip asked Jesus to show them the Father, revealing that he still didn't fully comprehend who Jesus was. In response, Jesus pointed out that knowing Him was the same as knowing the Father, for He and the Father are one.

Just like the intricate folds of origami, the nature of Jesus can sometimes be difficult for us to comprehend. But the more we engage with Scripture, pray, and seek to know Him, the clearer His image becomes to us. We begin to see Jesus not just as a historical figure or an abstract deity but as God Himself, full of grace, truth, and love.

Our journey of faith is a continuous process of seeing Jesus for who He really is and through Him, understanding the Father. As we seek Him, may we gain a deeper appreciation of His true identity and the magnificent love He has for us.

Reflect & Pray

How can you seek a deeper understanding of Jesus? How has your perception of Him grown over time?

Lord, thank You for revealing Yourself to us through Jesus. Help us to continually seek a deeper understanding of You so that we may know and love You more. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
