The Strength of Gentle Words

Bible in a Year: 2 Chronicles 17–19; John 11:38–57

"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." Proverbs 15:1

Today's Scripture & Insight: Proverbs 15:1-7

“Hey! Watch out!” Dan shouted as the car swerved into his lane.

The driver’s hasty apology was muffled by the din of honking horns. His temper flared, and he was tempted to lash out with a string of unkind words. But then, Dan recalled the Proverb: “A gentle answer turns away wrath.”

Reining in his anger, Dan offered a wave of forgiveness instead of an outburst of frustration. The driver’s tension visibly lessened; his shoulders relaxed as he mouthed a sheepish “Thank you.”

How often have we let our words fuel the flames of conflict instead of quenching them with kindness? Proverbs 15:1 reminds us that our words have power. They can either soothe or stir up emotions.

In this age of constant communication, it’s more important than ever to choose our words wisely. Even when it's challenging, we are called to respond with gentleness, bridging gaps instead of widening them.

Reflect & Pray

How can you use your words to soothe rather than stir up anger? What steps can you take to respond with gentleness, even when it’s challenging?

Dear God, help us to choose our words wisely, responding with gentleness and love, even in challenging situations.
